Safety footwear

Safety footwear here ranges from low-cut safety shoes and sporty S1P trainers to S3 rigger boots, S5 polymer boots and O2 occupational shoes without a toe cap. Models from Albatros, Cofra, Uvex, Dunlop, Cerva and Bennon are in the catalog, among others.

The marking inside the shoe tells you most of what matters. EN ISO 20345 safety footwear has a toe cap tested to 200 joules, while EN ISO 20347 occupational footwear has no toe cap requirement and uses O instead of S in its class codes. Within safety footwear, S1P adds puncture resistance, S2 adds water penetration resistance to the upper, S3 combines both with a cleated sole, and S5 marks all-polymer boots with puncture resistance. Extra codes such as HRO (heat-resistant outsole), FO (fuel oil resistance), WR (water resistance) and SRC, or SR under the 2022 revision, show whether a shoe suits a specific floor.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need safety shoes or occupational shoes?

If there is a risk of falling or rolling objects or crushing, the risk assessment normally calls for EN ISO 20345 safety footwear with a 200 J toe cap. EN ISO 20347 occupational shoes suit work where slip resistance, antistatic properties or comfort matter but there is no impact risk to the toes, for example in some food processing or healthcare roles.

How should I specify sizes in a footwear request?

Give a size run with the quantity for each EU size, and say whether a partial delivery is acceptable. Some safety footwear ranges also come in width fittings, so note if wide feet need to be covered. Clear size data lets every supplier quote the same thing, which keeps the standardized offers you receive comparable line by line.

Are composite toe caps as protective as steel?

Composite toe caps must pass the same EN ISO 20345 tests as steel: 200 J impact and 15 kN compression. They are lighter and do not set off metal detectors, while steel caps are usually thinner. For puncture resistance, the current standard marks metal inserts P and non-metallic inserts PL, or PS when tested with a thinner 3 mm nail.
